Greetings St. James,

Happy May!  St. James continues to move forward in the search for a Total Ministry Team mentor and contracted clergy services.  I know that we are all impatient for these two positions to be filled.  A huge thanks for those that participate and help every month in the service and activities at St. James.  God’s mission at St. James happens because of what each of us chooses to share of our gifts.

“Stations of the Moss” season is upon us.  If you were unable to attend spring clean-up, please take the time to inspect your station of the moss for routine spring maintenance.  There are some pruning tools at St. James that can be used.  Please join us and a big thank you in advance to all those that helped with the May Day basket project.  With the combined effort of many hands, it makes quick work of the project.  More than once when I have shared with people the church I attend their response has been, “Oh, you’re the church that leaves those lovely may baskets every year.”

I will conclude with a quote that helps me to keep perspective with my faith when I am feeling impatient or uneasy.

“Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.” ~Frederick Buechner

Peace,

Kristin Tuel, Senior Warden

ECW News – Edna Hermes

The ECW cancelled the April meeting.  The meeting is rescheduled for May 5th.

Prayer Chain – Donna Pickett

If you would like to be included on the prayer chain, please contact me.  When there is a prayer request, you would be notified (via email or phone call) so that you could include the individual, family, or whatever the prayer request might be, in your daily prayers.  Prayer requests would be directed to me and I would then notify those people who have decided to participate.  You do not need to contact the church office, but, if you do, Carrie will pass the information on to me.  My email address is: rpickett9098@charter.net.  My phone numbers are: 218-739-9098 or 218-770-6142.  Please let me know if you would like to be included in the prayer chain.

MS WALK 2012 – Linda & Dave Waring

Just a reminder that May 6th is the MS Walk 2012 at M State.  We are still hoping for more walkers, and of course, we could use your donations too.  Thanks to all of you who are involved already.  We are so grateful.  God Bless You All.  The Saint James Saints.

Transportation Ministry

Cindy Thernell has volunteered to coordinate volunteers for transportation needs at the church.  She will have a list of driver.  If you need a ride to church or a church function, please call Cindy at 218-731-6316.  If you need a ride for a Sunday service, please call by Thursday.  If you looking for a ride for other church functions, please try to give a 2 day lead.  Please note:  In order for us to give you a ride, you must be able to transfer with minimal assistance.

Friendly Visitors – Kris Bauer

We are looking for volunteers to contact members who have a hard time getting to church.  It would be great if we could have a list of volunteers willing to take a month to be a “Friendly Visitor”.  We would like the volunteers to contact a list of people.  Some people would like or need a monthly friendly visit and others prefer just a phone call.  I will be in charge of the volunteers, lists, and preferences.  The volunteer would be responsible for calling or visiting.  The visits would not be ‘pastoral’ visits but just a friendly visit from a friend in the church family.  I will volunteer for the month of May.  If you wish to volunteer for a month, please call the church office or Kris Bauer at 320-760-6845.

Note:  Women’s Book Club The Women’s Book Club meets at 7:00pm.  If you have any questions, contact Donna Pickett or Kris Bauer.

Book of Common Prayer Corner ~ ~~~

What you always wanted to know about the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) but were afraid to ask!

This month – Canticle Titles

When we conduct Morning and Evening Prayer, did you ever wonder why the canticles seem to have 2 titles?  For instance:  The Song of Simeon is also referred to as The Nunc Dimitis.  They not only have two titles, but one of them is in a foreign language which some among us may recognize as the dead language of Latin.

First question:  Why the Latin title?  Well, the Episcopal Church is a broad church in that we have many people with a wide variety of opinions and worship styles.  One group, sometimes referred to as Anglo Catholic or High Church, like Latin usages.  Thus, to honor their preferences, both the English and Latin titles of the canticles are used.

Now the classic Lutheran question:  What do the Latin titles mean?  The Latin titles are just the words from the first verse of the canticle.  For instance:  Nunc Dimitis means ‘now dismiss’ and Benedictus es Domine means ‘blessed is the Lord’.

Do you have a question regarding the Book of Common Prayer that you would like the BCP Corner author to answer?  Email it or call it in to the church…a message will be given to the BCP Corner author.

Prayer for the Total Ministry Team

Holy and gracious God, by your Spirit you empower and guide your church in your mission, strengthen and encourage all the baptized members of our faith communities in our call to discipleship with Christ Jesus.

In particular, we pray for your continued grace to all who are called to serve with the Total Ministry team, that their time of study and formation will be blessed, and that they will be filled with the truth of your Word, and clothed in holiness of life, so that they may serve you faithfully and well.  And so we give praise to God, our Creator, to the Son, Jesus the Christ, to the

Spirit who dwells in our hearts, now and forever.  Amen.

Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent.
Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
